Cycle Carriers Information
Car Racks
Q - How many bikes will I need to carry?
A - Car racks tend to hold 2 to 4 bikes.
Q - Will it fit on my car?
A - There are specific carriers that will fit to spare tires and tow bars, but generally most car racks will fit the majority of cars. It is up to you to decide whether you want to have a roof bar or one which fits on to the rear of your car.
Q - Does it take a lot of space to store?
A - Some racks may be cheaper but require assembly. Once they have been assembled and adjusted to fit they are easier to leave as they are, while others fold flat for easy storage.
Q - How strong is the rack?
A - Some racks are made from aluminium, and some steel. This doesn't necessarily alter the inherant strength, (you will always need to read the instructions to confirm the recommended maximum weight) but it will alter the weight of the rack itself. If the rack is made of aluminium it will be lighter - especially useful when fitting it to your car.
Q - Is it quick and easy to fit?
A - Read the label carefully before you buy! Some claim that they are easy to fit, yet will require five different tools to assemble! A rack which is fully assembled and can be fitted quickly is ideal.
Please Note: When installing and using car racks, always follow the manufacturer's guidelines closely.
Rear Boot Mounted Racks
Carrying your bikes on the boot is the most popular and easy option. All you have to do is adjust the framework to the shape of your car, and fit according to the instructions. Then simply fit the rubber bike straps, and load the bikes.
Roof Mounted Racks
Carrying bikes on the roof of your car is another alternative. The bikes sit firmly in place without covering up your vehicle's number plate and lights. If you have existing roof bars on your vehicle, then fitting is much easier and quicker.
Towbar Mounted Racks
If your car already has a towbar fitted, then this is a very easy and safe solution to the bike transportation problem.
Spare Tyre Mounted Racks
If you have a 4x4 with a rear-mounted tyre, then this is the option for you.
These racks are fitted very securely with a ratchet strap system. If your tyre sits off-centre then the rack can be adjusted to centralise the bikes on your vehicle.
A maximum of only two bikes can be carried on a spare wheel.
